Playing paintball in a Down Economy

In this economy everyone is looking for ways to stretch their dollar. From buying private label food at the supermarket to taking a “staycation” instead of a vacation, consumers are becoming resourceful when it comes to saving a buck.

The same holds true for our hobbies and pastimes. Recreation seems to be the perfect place to start to shave expenses, but the stress relief our hobbies gives us is almost invaluable in times like this. Still, there are ways to economize when it comes to virtually any activity. Yes, even when it comes to the adrenaline pumping, heart pounding sport of paintball.

It’s true, Paintball can be quite an expensive endeavor. There are ways, however, to make it more cost effective if you are willing to do a little legwork and make a few sacrifices.

One way to cut expenses is to realize it takes a village to equip a paintball enthusiast. Go in together with friends to buy items, or borrow a teammate’s gear. Split a case of paintballs or see if someone has extra gun parts you may need. Another way to lower costs is to shop around for different fields. If a little further drive nets you a savings on the admission fee, go for it. You can save even more money with two little words – road trip. Gather your friends and carpool to the field. You can also look for mid-week specials. Most fields are slow during the week and would rather players play at a discount than have the fields go empty.
Another thing you can do is assess your planned purchases as must haves and nice-to-haves. Hold off on the nice-to-haves until they become must haves. Aesthetic add-ons and upgrades are just that. They won’t improve you game.

When it comes to something you must buy, consider buying it used. Online auction sites, garage sales and flea markets are good places to try for gently used gear at attractive prices. If you simply must have new then you owe it to yourself to shop around. Don’t forget to look online. Things are usually cheaper, and may sites offer free shipping.

Finally, one of the most recurring and expensive costs associated with paintball is of course paint. But, there are things you can do to lower this expense as well. Modify your style of play by taking your gun out of auto mode, or simply choose your shots better. Another thing you can try is switching to a cheaper paint. There is a drawback to this, however, as a lesser grade of paintball can be less reliable making cleanup and maintenance more of a chore. As mentioned before, you can split the cost with someone and buy in bulk.

When it comes to paintball there are costs savings to be had if you know where to look. Don’t let a little recession keep you from your favorite activities.

Keep your eyes open for deals on the internet. It is usually the best place to find used or discounted paintball gear.
